Eric Smith said at the 2026 Sea-Air-Space Conference during a <a href=\"https:\/\/sas26.mapyourshow.com\/8_0\/sessions\/session-details.cfm?scheduleid=40\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Tuesday keynote<\/a> that the two services are working together with a \u201cunified sense of purpose\u201d to increase the size and availability of the U.S. amphibious fleet through three methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re in complete agreement that our current inventory of 31 amphibious ships is not sufficient to meet our new presence that our combatant commanders are requesting and requiring,\u201d Smith said during his speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of April 2026, there are four amphibious ships deployed across North America, the Caribbean and the Pacific, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2026\/04\/20\/usni-news-fleet-and-marine-tracker-april-20-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Navy data<\/a>. Currently, the amphibious assault ship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/04\/15\/us-navy-destroyer-intercepts-iranian-flagged-vessel-trying-to-skirt-blockade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">USS Tripoli<\/a> is in the Arabian Sea in support of the U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/03\/20\/uss-boxer-and-11th-marine-expeditionary-unit-deploy-to-middle-east\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">USS Boxer<\/a> has deployed to the Middle East from the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/03\/13\/pentagon-reportedly-sending-more-warships-and-marines-to-middle-east\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group<\/a> was sent to the Middle East in mid-March as reinforcements for the war in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2025, amphibious ships\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2025\/08\/18\/navy-amphib-readiness-dips-as-sailors-marines-deploy-for-caribbean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">readiness rate<\/a> crucial to Marine missions dropped to 41% amid increased U.S. operations in Latin America and the Caribbean to fight drug cartels. The lack of ships readily available caused a five-month delay in Marine Expeditionary Unit deployments last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his speech, Smith said that the Navy and Marine Corps are \u201coptimizing maintenance schedules\u201d and fourth-generation runs to get more out of the ships they already have. Secondly, the two services will invest in service life extensions for the \u201cbest of breed\u201d ships that are in the best mechanical and physical shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lastly, Smith said that they are moving forward with the procurement of new and more capable ships with the help of Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commandant noted that they are seeking \u201cincreased, sustained and predictable investments\u201d in the amphibious shipping industry to achieve this expansion and heightened availability of the fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith also noted that the fiscal year 2027 budget proposed by President Donald Trump was a considerable \u201cdown payment\u201d for this generational effort to build up the amphibious fleet, but it\u2019s just a start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo build the amphibious fleet that our nation needs and deserves will require continued commitment of leaders in uniform and the support of leaders in our government,\u201d Smith noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith said that they can \u201cnever walk away from\u201d bolstering the traditional amphibious capabilities, but they are also focusing on littoral mobility \u2014 the ability for Navy and Marine forces to move and operate to and from shore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Littorals encompass most of the Pacific, and the commandant referred to the Indo-Pacific as the world\u2019s most challenging environment due to its scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December 2025, the Navy and Marine Corps selected the Dutch shipbuilder Damen LST-100 design as their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/04\/17\/us-marine-corps-releases-video-showcasing-new-medium-landing-ship-design\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CCrucially%2C%20the%20LST%2D100,to%20revamp%20the%20Navy's%20fleet.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">new medium landing ship<\/a>, which Smith highlighted in his speech as having \u201cgame changing capability\u201d for allowing the forces to maneuver and self-sustain in a
