{"id":81739,"date":"2026-03-09T23:57:44","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T23:57:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2026\/03\/09\/trump-calls-war-in-iran-a-little-excursion\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T17:02:36","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:02:36","slug":"trump-calls-war-in-iran-a-little-excursion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2026\/03\/09\/trump-calls-war-in-iran-a-little-excursion\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump calls war in Iran a \u2018little excursion\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Donald Trump declared on Monday that the United States has already \u201cwon\u201d the war with Iran \u201cin many ways,\u201d but conceded that broader objectives of the conflict \u2014 which he described as a \u201clittle excursion\u201d \u2014 remain unresolved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump, speaking from his eponymously named golf club in South Florida during a House Republican policy retreat, addressed the state of the war, while reflecting on its human cost. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe hardest thing to do is go to Dover,\u201d he said, referring to his weekend visit to the Air Force base in Delaware where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2026\/03\/08\/first-us-casualties-of-operation-epic-fury-return-as-trump-vows-escalation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2026\/03\/08\/first-us-casualties-of-operation-epic-fury-return-as-trump-vows-escalation\/\">remains of the first six American service members killed in action were returned to U.S. soil<\/a>. \u201c[The families] all said one thing to me, \u2018Make sure you win, sir. Make sure you win.\u2019 They weren\u2019t playing games.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added: \u201cWe\u2019ve already won in many ways, but we haven\u2019t won enough. We go forward more determined than ever to achieve ultimate victory that will end this long running danger once and for all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Defense on Monday identified a seventh U.S. service member killed in the war as 26-year-old Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/03\/09\/pentagon-identifies-seventh-soldier-killed-in-action-during-operation-epic-fury\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/03\/09\/pentagon-identifies-seventh-soldier-killed-in-action-during-operation-epic-fury\/\">Sgt. Benjamin Pennington<\/a>. He died from wounds sustained in an Iranian attack on Prince Sultan Air Base, Saudi Arabia, on March 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The president subsequently held a press conference at the same venue, and outlined the next phase of Operation Epic Fury. He claimed that the U.S. has eliminated more than 90% of Iran\u2019s missile launchers and more than 80% of its drone launchers, but added that there would be more strikes on the Islamic Republic\u2019s remaining capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are ahead of our initial timeline by a lot,\u201d Trump told reporters, asserting that the U.S. is \u201cachieving major strides towards completing our military objective in Iran.\u201d He noted that \u201csome people could say they\u2019re pretty well complete.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The president did not say with any specificity what that military objective is, however. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe could call it a tremendous success right now,\u201d he said. \u201cOr we can go further. We\u2019re going to go further.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked if the war with Iran would be over this week, the president said, \u201cno\u201d but added, \u201csoon, very soon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump also sought to minimize the economic ripples emanating from his military campaign against Iran. He cast the surge in oil prices since the conflict began as both inevitable and ultimately inconsequential to Americans, arguing that it \u201cdoesn\u2019t really affect
