classified as having a permanent skin condition will face administrative separation, the service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mynavyhr.navy.mil\/Portals\/55\/Messages\/NAVADMIN\/NAV2026\/NAV26162.pdf?ver=9Wr6pkoJ62fLODVTk4yXqg%3d%3d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mynavyhr.navy.mil\/Portals\/55\/Messages\/NAVADMIN\/NAV2026\/NAV26162.pdf?ver=9Wr6pkoJ62fLODVTk4yXqg%3d%3d\">announced<\/a> Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Active duty and reserve sailors granted facial hair accommodations will be allowed to receive medical treatment for up to 12 months under new Navy grooming standards, but if the irritation they face from shaving is incurable, then they will be evaluated for discharge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new guidance doesn\u2019t apply to waivers for Navy grooming standards submitted on the basis of religious accommodations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMission accomplishment hinges on stringent compliance with standards and ensuring implementing policies are clear, unambiguous, and compliant with law and regulation,\u201d a Navy administrative message said. \u201cGrooming standards add to sailor and mission safety and ensure the safe and proper utilization of protective equipment in all naval environments and operational conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement follows a February <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2025\/09\/15\/troops-with-medical-shaving-waivers-to-face-separation-hegseth-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2025\/09\/15\/troops-with-medical-shaving-waivers-to-face-separation-hegseth-says\/\">Pentagon memo<\/a> in which Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that troops who required medical shaving waivers for over a year would face involuntary separation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sailors experiencing razor bumps or irritation resulting from shaving are to report it to their supervisor so that they can receive a military medical evaluation and treatment plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Service members specifically suffering from a diagnosed skin condition like pseudofolliculitis barbae are instructed to provide \u201cmedical findings, recommendations and a medical provider signature\u201d to their command so that they may be approved for a shaving accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pseudofolliculitis barbae leads to unwanted bumps and painful ingrown hairs after shaving.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2026\/03\/19\/service-members-must-prove-sincere-religious-beliefs-for-facial-hair-waivers\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" religious beliefs for facial hair waivers<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Religious waivers that have already been approved will be reevaluated within 90 days, the memo states.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 60% of Black men are affected by the condition, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medical treatment plans will last no longer than 90 days, but service members are allotted up to four 90-day blocks for treatment during a 12-month span.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commanding officers will make the final decision on whether a service member is approved for a shaving waiver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Service members with an approved accommodation are only allowed to grow their facial hair out to one quarter of an inch from their skin and should carry their accommodation with them at all times when they are not shaving and in uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a sailor reports to a new command, they must present their approved accommodation and treatment plan to the new commanding officer so that the CO can review it and permit them to continue their accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After 12 months, a sailor with a facial hair accommodation will be evaluated to see if they\u2019re allowed to continue serving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Service members with an incurable condition face the possibility of being administratively separated if a medical evaluation board determines the service member\u2019s condition is permanent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Administrative separations for sailors with a permanent condition will begin no earlier than July 8, 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service has gone back and forth on the severity of its grooming standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy reviewed a policy in 2020 that would end the need for permanent shaving waivers for those diagnosed with pseudofolliculitis barbae. In 2022, the service altogether <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/branches\/navy\/2022-03-10\/navy-nixes-booting-some-sailors-who-cant-meet-facial-hair-rules-5293334.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">halted<\/a> separations for sailors with facial hair conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2026\/06\/12\/navy-to-reevaluate-religious-accommodations-for-facial-hair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">announced<\/a> in June that it will be reevaluating religious accommodations for facial hair that doesn\u2019t adhere to grooming standards and implementing new procedures in the near
