The New Jersey is entering the fleet roughly 14 years after then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates ended the ban on women serving on subs in 2010. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Female officers did not join the submarine force until 2011, and such roles only opened up to enlisted sailors in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A commissioning ceremony for the submarine will occur in Leonardo, New Jersey, according to the Navy. It is the third Navy vessel bearing the name of the Garden State.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/12\/01\/this-officer-is-the-first-woman-to-serve-as-xo-of-a-submarine\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/sub-force.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This officer is the first woman to serve as XO of a submarine<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Lt. Cmdr. Amber Cowan joined the Navy in 2010. A year later the submarine force was opened to female officers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HII-Newport News Shipbuilding delivered the New Jersey to the Navy in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Female trailblazers in the submarine community include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/12\/01\/this-officer-is-the-first-woman-to-serve-as-xo-of-a-submarine\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lt. Cmdr. Amber Cowan<\/a>, who became the first woman to serve as the executive officer of a submarine in 2022 aboard the ballistic missile submarine Kentucky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/09\/01\/this-sailor-is-the-first-woman-to-serve-as-chief-of-the-boat\/\" target=\"_blank\">Master Chief Information Systems Technician (Submarine) Angela Koogler<\/a> also became the first woman to serve as a chief of the boat, the senior enlisted adviser to the commanding and executive officers, aboard the nuclear ballistic missile submarine Louisiana that same year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plans are underway to expand the number of submarine vessels with women. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adm. William Houston, then-commander of Naval Submarine Forces, said last year that he signed a \u201cmajor revision\u201d to the Navy\u2019s plan to integrate women into the submarine fleet.
