WASHINGTON \u2014 The Trump administration announced Monday it is reactivating economic sanctions on Iran<\/a> that were lifted as part of the landmark multinational nuclear accord \u2014 a tough move that may nonetheless leave the U.S. more isolated<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The action follows up on President Donald Trump\u2019s unilateral decision in May to withdraw from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action negotiated by the Obama administration to lift sanctions on Iran in exchange for a freeze on its nuclear program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

European nations, Russia and China had urged Trump<\/a> to stay in the pact. And on Monday, the European Union moved to thwart America\u2019s reimposition of Iran sanctions, announcing a \u201cblocking statute\u201d to shield EU operators to recover damages and ban EU persons from complying with the sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A statement by EU diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini and the foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany said it would also work to keep \u201ceffective financial channels\u201d open with Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe deeply regret the re-imposition of sanctions by the US, due to the latter\u2019s withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),\u201d the statement issued in Brussels said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump argued the JCPOA was a \u201chorrible, one-sided deal\u201d that left Tehran with the resources to fuel conflict in the Middle East. The administration has touted the reimposition of actions as a means to cut off Tehran\u2019s ability to fund terrorism and weapons proliferation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSince the deal was reached, Iran\u2019s aggression has only increased. The regime has used the windfall of newly accessible funds it received under the JCPOA to build nuclear-capable missiles, fund terrorism, and fuel conflict across the Middle East and beyond,\u201d Trump said in a statement Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In spite of EU opposition, Trump said he wants to get tougher still, with \u201ca more comprehensive deal that addresses the full range of the regime\u2019s malign activities, including its ballistic missile program and its support for terrorism.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first wave of sanctions will go into effect at midnight for Iran\u2019s automotive sector and on its precious medals trade, with the next wave of sanctions targeting Iran\u2019s energy sector due in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe United States is fully committed to enforcing all of our sanctions, and we will work closely with nations conducting business with Iran to ensure complete compliance,\u201d Trump said. \u201cIndividuals or entities that fail to wind down activities with Iran risk severe consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
