JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Missouri National Guard is scaling back its presence in the St. Louis area after being deployed to help provide security after violent protests.
Gov. Jay Nixon said Tuesday that more than 1,200 Guard members remained in Ferguson and parts of St. Louis County, but that the Guard had ended its duties in St. Louis city.
At one point, Nixon had called more than 2,200 Guard members to the area after protesters looted and burned stores in response to the announcement that Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson won’t be charged for fatally shooting Michael Brown.
The governor did not say when all of the Guard members would be withdrawn.
Nixon says the Missouri State Highway Patrol also is continuing to work with St. Louis city and county police.
