ALBANY, N.Y. — A New York state Assemblyman is calling on the state to open its military armories to the homeless as temporary shelters when cold weather hits.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently ordered local communities to transport all homeless individuals to shelters when the temperature dips below freezing.
Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi says that may be a burden for “cash-strapped” local governments and homeless agencies and suggests the state can help by providing the armories as temporary shelters.
The Utica Democrat says one of his own local shelters is already at capacity.
Brindisi says he has written to the state’s adjutant general about his idea.
