CARSON CITY, Nev. — More than 200 Nevada National Guard members participated in a run to mark the fifth anniversary of a shooting that killed four people at a Carson City IHOP restaurant, including three Guard members.
Gov. Brian Sandoval joined soldiers in the annual run Tuesday morning. He told guard officials that the shooting affected the whole state and the run is a way to show that the fallen are still remembered.
The Las Vegas-based 17th Sustainment Brigade held a similar memorial run at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait.
Those killed in the Sept. 6, 2011, attack included Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, Master Sgt. Christian Riege and Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney. South Lake Tahoe resident Florence Donovan-Gunderson also died.
The 33-year-old gunman fatally shot himself. He had been previously diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
