Defense Secretary Ash Carter and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper recommended to President Obama last month that Adm. Mike Rogers be removed as the head of the National Security Agency, according to the Washington Post. Carter and Clapper “want Rogers out over perceived failures fighting ISIS and lax security keeping,” according to NBC News.
The Post reports that action on the recommendation has been delayed due to a separate pending controversial recommendation to change the NSA’s and military’s cyberwarfare unit’s chains of command.
News of Carter’s and Clapper’s recommendation comes as Rogers, who is being considered by President-elect Donald Trump as a replacement for Clapper, met with Trump in New York last week without notifying his superiors, a “move apparently unprecedented for a military officer” that caused “consternation at senior levels of the administration,” according to the Post.
