May will be a bountiful month for captain promotions, with nearly 2,300 Regular Army first lieutenants advancing to that rank on the fourth anniversary of their commissioning.
All total, there will be 2,980 officers promoted to the ranks of chief warrant officer three through colonel in May, the largest monthly total in at least three years.
The 2,169 Army Competitive Category lieutenants advancing to captain May 1 will be hitting the fourth anniversary of their commissioning from West Point and the Reserve Officer Training Corps network of colleges and universities.
Since the beginning of the drawdown three years ago, the Army has been lengthening the average pin-on point for captain from three years to the 48-month standard in place before the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Within the Army Competitive Category, there will be 782 promotions to colonel in May, 101 to lieutenant colonel, 121 to major, 67 to chief warrant officer three, 30 to chief warrant officer four and six to chief warrant officer five.
The monthly promotion plan will complete the 2014 lieutenant colonel lists for the Chaplain Corps and Medical Specialist Corps, and the 2014 Chaplain Corps captain list.
