FORT CARSON, Colo. — Army investigators say Fort Carson soldiers who were flying a drone when it crashed 12 miles from the post didn’t have the proper clearance to fly it and didn’t alert key leaders.
The Colorado Springs Gazette reported Friday the investigation found the small Raven drone malfunctioned and flew away when controllers tried to recall it.
The investigative report says the cause of the malfunction wasn’t known but might have been a battery or computer problem.
The Gazette obtained the report under an open-records request.
Fort Carson’s commander ordered the unit that was flying the drone to get remedial training and directed the post improve its drone plans.
The drone crashed into a tree outside a Colorado Springs house on May 12. The man who found it called police.
