A soldier assigned to Fort Wainwright, Alaska, has died from an apparent accidental gunshot wound, officials said Monday.
Sgt. Nathan Michael Higginbotham, 25, died early Sunday morning in Fairbanks after a privately-owned firearm he was handling accidentally discharged, according to information from U.S. Army Alaska. No others were harmed in the accident incident, and no foul play is suspected. The Fairbanks Police Department is investigating the incident.
Higginbotham was assigned to 5th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.
A native of Schenectady, New York, Higginbotham joined the Army in May 2010 and completed one station unit training at Fort Benning, Georgia. His first duty station was Fort Hood, Texas, and he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn in 2011. He had been assigned to U.S. Army Alaska since January 2013.
