At a White House ceremony Monday morning, President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to retired Lt. Col. Charles Kettles.

Kettles, 86, made multiple helicopter flights as part of a daring rescue mission in Vietnam’s Song Tau Cau river valley on May 16, 1967, saving the lives of dozens of soldiers. Read more about the officer and his heroism here and here, and see his entry in the Military Times Hall of Valor here.
