General Dynamics Canada has won several communications contracts recently.
Under one contract, the company will upgrade Combat Net Radios for the Canadian military. The three-year contract, worth $109 million in U.S. currency, calls for software and hardware upgrades for more than 11,000 Combat Net Radios and 6,800 Vehicle Interface Units. Upgrades to the radios, which were purchased in 1991, include simultaneous operation of voice, messaging and positional awareness reporting, according to a General Dynamics news release. Throughput and speed of data transmission will also be boosted.
Initial delivery of the upgrades is schedule to begin in May 2015 and finish in 2017.
Under another pair of contracts award by the Department of National Defence, the company will build satellite ground stations for the Mercury Global project. The company will build seven anchor stations that allow access to the Wideband Global Satellite (WGS) system. The other contract covers service and support, including repair and mission planning.
“Through the Mercury Global program, General Dynamics Canada will facilitate the transfer of specialized WGS satellite communications knowledge and technology to Canada,” the company said. “Such transfer will stimulate Canadian industry in the field of satellite communications and support the creation of Canadian high-technology jobs in the future.”
