Emerging communications technologies are greatly enhancing the ability of soldiers and commanders operating in battle conditions to receive the most recent information on the situation in useful formats.
“Traditionally … they have a voice. They get it over the radio, they don’t have a picture,” said MAJ Stephen Dail, Brigade, communications officer (S6) with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division. New systems, such as those recently being tested at Network Integration Evaluation 15.1, can push maps, video and text to soldiers in vehicles.
“It really helps them keep that situational awareness,” Dail said.
Newer systems are designed to be simple to operate, so that soldiers do not have to go through a complicated process in a rapidly-changing situation, he added.
