The Defense Department would get a jump start on modernization efforts if the president’s 2016 budget request should pass. It includes $21 billion for the military’s work on updating ships, nuclear assets, ground vehicles and other systems, according to a report in Defense News.
Under the constraints of the Budget Control Act, the DoD has recently been conducting a “running reset,” incremental adjustments rather than the major change needed.
“This budget is the best balance of ends, ways and means that we could possibly achieve given the level of resources” available, said Deputy Defense Secretary Bob Work at a briefing with reporters following the budget’s release on Feb. 2. “And this is especially true with regard to maintaining our technological superiority in the 21st century.”
