Increment 2 of the Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) has moved from development to testing.
Increment 2 will consolidate SBIRS ground stations from three to one. During a three-day test, the Air Force used Increment 2 to transmit and receive commands to missile defense satellites, according to a Lockheed Martin news release.
“Increment 2 is on target to replace the legacy system by 2016 with significant performance improvements,” said David Sheridan, SBIRS program director for Lockheed Martin. “Consolidating operations into a centralized SBIRS ground system will enable warfighters to more efficiently monitor worldwide threats and alert responders for immediate action.”
