A Stamford, Connecticut, man has pled guilty to a federal charge after scaling the White House fence on Thanksgiving Day in 2015, announced U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips and Brian J. Ebert, the special agent in charge of the U.S. Secret Service Washington Field Office.
Joseph A. Caputo, 23, was witnessed mounting the fence while wearing an American flag as a cape and was summarily apprehended while on the North Lawn.
The charge — entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds — carries a maximum of one year in prison, possible fines and up to a year of supervised release.
The government will recommend at Caputo’s Dec. 6 sentencing that he receive probation, with the stipulation he stay away from the District of Columbia and any facilities, sites or people under Secret Service protection. In addition, Caputo must agree to Secret Service interviews and psychiatric evaluation, if requested.
