Virtualization was a key contributor to the Defense Department’s saving $260 million through IT reform over a four-year span, according to the Government Accountability Office. The GAO report sought to assess the overall success of reform programs.
In data center consolidation and optimization, the Treasury Department reported $1 billion in cost avoidances, based on reductions in the ratio of spending on IT infrastructure compared to total IT spending.
Agencies reported total savings of $3.6 billion between 2011 and 2014, of which $2 billion (55.4 percent) can be attributed to data center consolidation efforts. DoD’s virtualization is part of that $2 billion.
