Some innovation strategies that the private sector counts on are not available to the government, according to FCC CIO David Bray, including the ability to make mistakes for the sake of learning more.
“We are under public scrutiny because we need to be stewards of the taxpayers’ dollars,” he said during the recent Executive Leadership Conference, speaking as part of a panel with other federal IT leaders. “Where ‘fail fast, fail often’ might work for some not in public service, I think if any one of us started failing too much, maybe after the second time, we’re probably out of a job.”

However, the amount of data that organizations have to deal with is growing at a staggering rate, as is the number of devices that are connected, in one way or another, to the Internet.
“There’s no textbook for that,” he said. “That’s exponential change.”
