The Office of Personnel Management closed off a web portal for federal retirees Monday after being made aware of a malfunction that exposed user accounts to unauthorized access.
A glitch in the system allowed retirees logging in to the portal Monday morning to gain access to the personal accounts of other users.
“As a result, individuals logging into their personal accounts inadvertently may have had access to other retirees’ personal information,” an OPM spokesman said. “OPM has disabled the portal while we investigate the circumstances of the malfunction and will notify affected individuals if personal information is determined to have been compromised.”
The official declined to comment on how many retirees might have been affected or when the portal will be operational again.
