Making mobile apps secure enough to pass muster in a secure federal environment is not an easy thing, but it often can be done. Stephen Rice, CIO at the Transportation Security Administration, will share his ideas and experiences with data and mobile app security in a special, free, Federal Times webcast on Aug. 11.

Mobile devices are among the frequently cited security risks for federal and defense agencies — alongside shadow IT and shared services — according to a SolarWinds survey released in late July.
A third of the survey respondents came from defense organizations, while 55 percent came from federal civilian and independent agencies. While 36 percent said their agencies allow only agency-issued devices to connect to agency networks, 35 percent of Defense Department respondents said no mobile access is allowed at all.A full 80 percent of respondents believe mobile access to agency networks poses a security risk, although most of them believe the risk is manageable.
Rice, who is also TSA’s assistant administrator for the Office of Information Technology, will give attendees strategies for securing, deploying and managing mobile applications within a secure federal environment.
Even agencies with highly secure information environments can use mobile technologies to good effect. Rice will explain what that requires.
