Cybersecurity at the State Department deteriorated under Hillary Clinton’s tenure, according to an Associated Press report that draws on a White House report card.
The downward trend has continued under Secretary John Kerry, according to the State Department’s inspector general, cited in the report.
The latest IG assessment is due in a few weeks.
State Department officials argue that the department’s cybersecurity is improving, while acknowledging some shortcomings.
“We have a strong cybersecurity program, successfully defeating almost 100 percent of the 4 billion attempted intrusions we experience each year,” spokesman Mark Toner said in the AP article. However, in late 2014, Russian cyberintruders broke into State’s email system.
