The innovation team at 18F — an intra-governmental consultancy that helps agencies on digital projects — won’t be growing much larger in the near-term, as the group is currently pausing its onboarding process to deal with a backlog of applicants.
While the team is “briefly pausing applications while we evolve how 18F plans for open roles,” three positions remain open, all of them focused on securing applications and networks from breaches, according to the team’s jobs site.
Joining 18F: Three Open Cybersecurity Positions
An 18F spokesperson noted the Technology Transformation Service — a newly created business line at GSA that now houses 18F — is hiring for a few positions, including commissioner, and 18F is “processing a large candidate backlog while assessing their capacity so that they can continue to work on the most pressing technology problems brought forth by our federal agencies while delivering cost savings to the American people.”
During that time, 18F will still be looking to fill three positions: an application security engineer, penetration tester and security operations engineer.
“18F is looking for talented [cybersecurity professionals] to join our team and help us build secure applications,” according to the applications. “This is a unique opportunity to help redefine how the government builds secure software. You’ll be a key contributor in helping to secure the tools and technology that the American people use to interact with the government. 18F is an open source team, so most of what you work on will be open source.”
Each job listing goes into further detail, including a short description to help prospective applicants decide if it’s the right position for them.
Application Security Engineer: This role is perfect for you if care deeply about shipping secure code. You should be excited to spread that knowledge throughout 18F’s engineering disciplines — and beyond.
Penetration Tester: This role is perfect for you if you love “breaking” systems to make them better. You should be excited to get to find exploits in our software — and then work with us to fix them!
Security Operations Engineer: This role is perfect for you if you love building and improving infrastructure systemically. You should be excited to build automated systems that address security issues before they happen.
All three new hires will join 18F at the GS-15 level, which comes with an annual salary between $101,000 and $132,000 (and up to $160,000 with locality pay).
Despite working on security issues, these positions don’t require security clearances, 18F said in a July 19 tweet, noting this is true of all their positions.
While the team is not looking to fill other positions right now, the “Joining 18F” site urges interested persons to send in their information anyway so they can be alerted when new opportunities become available.
