Good work brings a great deal of satisfaction with or without accolades. But let’s be honest – they don’t hurt either.
That’s why the Federal Times team is in great spirits, having learned the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) bestowed some top honors on our work. ASBPE announced July 21 its national Azbee Awards of Excellence, which showcase the best of B2B print, online and design work. Our 50 Years of Federal Times online multimedia report took home the Gold award for microsite/special section. The campaign also was named a top 10 finalist for cross-platform excellence.
Some might recall this ambitious project: To honor the publication’s 50th anniversary last year, Federal Times delved into five decades of government, showcasing the events, people and trends that most impacted how government operates.

In all, Federal Times generated 17 videos, five galleries, and 23 stories, filtering to a dedicated microsite. At the heart of the project was our list of the 10 historic events that shaped federal management and structure during the past five decades, as chosen by an advisory board of former federal executives.
From the Vietnam War and moon landing, to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and leaks of classified information by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, we rolled out online packages for each event, including an article on the lasting significance and a film with executive commentary and historic b-roll. The campaign, which spurred record-breaking web traffic, also included informative photo galleries, listicles, and commentary and video interviews with federal leaders of today. Reaffirming the significance of the project, President Barack Obama was among the federal executives to contribute.
Federal Times also won ASBPE’s national silver award for government coverage, and the mid-Atlantic region’s gold award in the category. This is testament to Federal Times ongoing commitment to reporting the stories that matter most to government operations, management and transformation.
To our team, I thank you for the hard work and dedication to the best of journalism. And to our readers, a thank you from Editor Kathleen Murphy, our reporters and I for your commitment to what we’ve created during the last 50 years. Much more to come.
