A security guard shot at the U.S. Census Bureau headquarters in Suitland, Maryland, has died, according to a report in USA Today.
The shooting happened around 6 p.m. Thursday, when the guard, Lawrence Buckner, 59, approached a car occupied by an arguing couple at the gate. That set off a police chase into Washington that eventually ended with a D.C. Metro Police sergeant wounded and a kidnapping suspect wounded and in custody.
However, that was not the end of things at the Suitland Federal Center, which houses other federal offices in addition to the Census Bureau. All entrances were closed around 7:45 p.m. and tactical law enforcement teams arrived, according to reports.
A loudspeaker announced a “security-related incident” and said all vehicles on campus would be searched. A TV reporter heard more than 20 loud bangs from inside the complex, starting about 8 p.m. and lasting several minutes.
In a statement issued at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, the Census Bureau said only that there had been “an incident” at the center, and that an investigation was in progress.
Authorities identified the suspect as Ronald Anderson, according to WJLA.
