Thirty colleges and universities responded when Military Times asked for photos of veterans centers that had opened, or were remodeled, within the past two years.
For the camaraderie, the career counseling, the crisis help, or the coffee — many centers have learned that a stout brew can bring vets through the doors — the centers are a good place to relax among other student veterans.
Some institutions applied through the Veterans Center Initiative Grant program, a partnership between Student Veterans of America and the Home Depot Foundation, for the money to create a safe space where student vets can hang out and study. Others moved their centers into larger areas with updated furniture and technology.
