By the end of the year, civilian gun enthusiasts will be able to find out if the Heckler & Koch 416 was worth the wait. Yep. Five years after H&K introduced its “enhanced” M4 style carbine, the German gunmaker unveiled a civilian version of its 416, a piston-driven 5.56mm carbine that was initially developed for the Army’s elite Delta Force.
The MR556 and the MR762, a version of H&K 417 in 7.62mm, will go on sale commercially later this fall, said Wayne Weber, executive vice president for H&K USA. Ooggle the H&K 762 after the break.

“It has taken a while, but there has been such an enormous demand for a civilian version of the 416 and 417,” he said. Both versions, unveiled at Show Show ’09, feature 16.5-inch barrels.
But the new carbines won’t come cheap. The MR556 will retail for $3,000 to $3,500 each, Weber said. The MR762 will go for about $300 more. H&K officials say they hope to bring the price down when more of the parts can be made in America rather than Germany, Weber said.<
