SureFire’s new Y300 Ultra flashlight is the railmount-less incarnation of their popular X300 weaponlight series. The 2 CR123 batteries are side-by-side instead of end-to-end in the Y300 (and X300), giving the light a short, wide shape. This shorter body includes a magnetic attachment system that allows the Y300 to attach to any steel surface or to its included magnet belt clip for secure carry and easy access. In addition, the Y300 includes a steel pocket clip for secure pocket carry or to clip the light to the bill of a cap.
And, before you ask, Surefire says, “Although it strongly resembles SureFire’s X-Series WeaponLights, the Y300U is NOT designed for attachment to a weapon of any kind.”
The light’s switch is the same rotating stalk push/toggle arrangement as it is on the X300 with the addition of a second brightness setting. You get 15 and 500 lumens, but it’s not clear how the switch works. It could be rotate one way for high power and the other for low, or it could be a tap-and-hold configuration. Either way, it may take some getting used to for anyone picking this up after using conventional tail-mounted thumbswitch. The light is just 3.6 inches long with a weight of 5.5 ounces including two 123A lithium batteries.
The body and bezel are constructed of aerospace aluminum that’s finished with Mil-Spec hard anodizing that resists chipping and corrosion. The unit is also gasket and O-ring sealed to keep debris and moisture away from Y300U’s electronics. The Y300 Ultra has an MSRP of $295.
