During his first three official calls on Monday as newly confirmed Defense Secretary James Mattis broke with Donald Trump on NATO, saying that the United States has an "unshakable commitment to NATO.” On the campaign trail, Trump was critical of NATO, giving European members an ultimatum "to pay their fair share" or get out. He even said, "If it breaks up NATO, it breaks up NATO.” The White House Press Secretary says that Mattis is more focused on "how to reform and make organizations like NATO more effective."
