One of the original Montford Point Marines, former Pfc. Willie Woods, was among the first African Americans in the U.S. Marine Corps. Their outstanding service during and after World War II helped lead to Executive Order 9981, officially ending segregation within the U.S. military. The Montford Point Marines were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2012, recognizing them for their outstanding contribution to our nation’s history. (American Veterans Center video)
