Eight sailors were injured aboard the carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower on Friday afternoon after an arresting gear on the flight deck parted while an E-2C Hawkeye was landing.
All of the sailors are in a stable condition with non-life threatening injuries, Naval Air Force Atlantic said in a Friday news release.
“The injured Sailors were working on the flight deck at the time of the mishap. The names of the injured personnel will not be released. Notification of families is being conducted,” AIRLANT said. “The aircraft regained flight and returned safely to its base at Norfolk Naval Station Chambers Field. Initial reports are the aircraft was not damaged and no aircrew members were injured.”
The Ike is currently conducting its conducting Composite Training Unit and Joint Task Force Exercises off Virginia to certify to deploy. An investigation into the accident has started. The ship is off the Virginia coast conducting carrier qualifications for Composite Training Unit and Joint Task Force Exercises (COMPTUEX/JTFEX) in preparation for their upcoming deployment.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause.
