An under-served population of about 4,000 veterans within the southwest Valley region of Arizona are expected to get better health care thanks to the opening of a new U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs primary care clinic.
The Arizona Republic reported that Buckeye Vice Mayor Craig Heustis said “the biggest problem we have out west — from Buckeye, all the way to Lake Havasu, all the way to Yuma — is that there’s nothing for veterans.”
A veteran himself, having served in the Marine Corps in Vietnam, Heustis advocated for a veterans clinic in the southwest Valley ever since the one in Buckeye closed in 2013 because the VA couldn’t find a contractor to operate it.
Veterans in western Arizona had to travel to the Surprise clinic or to the VA hospital in central Phoenix before the clinic at Estrella Health Center in west Phoenix opened, Heustis said.
The new VA clinic is located on the 4th floor of 9250 W. Thomas Road, Phoenix, AZ, and is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
