Cyberattacks will continue against American interests until such actions have consequences, said the nation’s top intelligence official, according to an Associated Press report.
Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told the House intelligence committee the lack of response to cyberattacks has created a “permissive environment.” He cited the recent hack of the Office of Personnel Management that was linked to China and compromised the personal information of more than 22 million current and former government employees and applicants.
“We will continue to see this until we create both the substance and the psychology of deterrence,” Clapper said.
