The fight against the Islamic State terror group, known alternately as ISIS, ISIL and Daesh, involves numerous approaches, facets, partners, tools and weapons. But if any of those involve cyber, the top spokesman for the operation isn’t saying so.
In an “Ask Me Anything” forum on the Reddit social network, Col. Steve Warren, spokesman for Operation Inherent Resolve, took questions from the public on progress against the Islamic State group ISIS, coordination with Russia, the struggles in and with Syria and more regarding the U.S. and coalition effort to take down the terror group. In many cases, he offered his thoughts on the mission that lies ahead in the fight and in rebuilding, but in others, he was decidedly more reticent.
For example, when asked how cyber operations figure in with Operation Inherent Resolve, Warren actually took a cue from pop culture rather than answer:
“The first rule of cyber operations: never talk about cyber operations. The second rule of cyber operations: never talk about cyber operations,” Warren wrote, borrowing a famous line from the movie “Fight Club.” At least some readers liked the response, though, with the quip getting “upvoted” dozens of times.
He was equally sardonic in a handful of other responses, such as one Reddit user’s query about the spokesman’s thoughts on Russian strategy in the fight against the Islamic State groupISIS.
“What Russian strategy? If they send it to me I’ll be happy to comment on it,” he wrote.
