It seems that unpiloted aircraft and ever-sharper sensors are one of the major dynamics shaping the military of tomorrow. Very few days go by without an announcement of a new UAV capability, a new sensor innovation or some combination of the two.
For example, Lockheed Martin recently released the Legion sensor pod, which offers long-range detection and tracking in a wide field of view. DARPA has put out a call to innovators to develop sensors that can detect motion even while they are in a low-power “sleep” mode. The Navy is adding sensors to the Fire Scout unmanned helicopter to turn it into a submarine hunter.
COL Courtney Cote, project manager of the Army’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Project Office, will offer an update on the evolution of unmanned platforms and sensors at the 14th annual C4ISR & Networks Conference on April 7. Click here for more details.
