The Army is looking for an open architecture that will allow teaming between manned and unmanned platforms.
To enable soldiers to easily control unmanned assets, the Army will rely on artificial intelligence “agents” to handle the workload, according to the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) proposal.
These “assistants,” embedded on unmanned aircraft and ground vehicles, will be capable of mixed initiative, task-level, and behavior-based control; dynamic planning and re-planning, according to the Army. They will handle coordination, collaboration and teaming to reduce operator workload.

The challenge for the AI is to quickly and accurately find and acquire targets. The AI will have to work for both aerial and ground unmanned vehicles.
The solicitation will officially open on Jan. 15, with responses due by Feb. 18. Two more phases are scheduled later in the year.
