French security officials are concerned about unidentified unmanned craft that have been spotted above the country’s nuclear power plants, the New York Times reports. The UAVs have illegally flown over more than a dozen plants since early October.
The UAVs are small and civilian, not military, a government official told the newspaper. France’s worry is that the craft are taking photos and videos of the plants from overhead.
“One of our security concerns is to avoid having any precise images’ being taken of the nuclear plant,” the official said, as quoted in the report.
The Times subsequently reported that police had arrested two men and a woman near a nuclear plant in central France; the trio had two small UAVs with them. However, after questioning them, police said they did not appear to be connected to the mysterious flights.
According to TheConversation.com, the flights violate a 2.5-km no-fly zone in place to protect France’s nuclear facilities.
