The MQ-9 Reaper Extended Range has been operationally fielded.
The Reaper-ER was fielded by the Air Force last month, according to a General Atomics news release. The new version, created by adding a kit to an older model, has greater range and endurance.
“A Reaper can be transformed into a Reaper ER through the integration of a field-retrofittable modification package consisting of two wing-mounted fuel tanks which significantly extend the aircraft’s maximum endurance,” General Atomics said. It also uses alcohol/water injection and a four-bladed propeller.
The Reaper ERs were ordered under an Air Force Quick Reaction Capability requirement for 38 unmanned aerial vehicles to be delivered in 13 months, and operational capability in 18 months.
