WASHINGTON — Former FBI Director James Comey’s testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday will draw most of the media focus on Capitol Hill this week, but congressional defense committees will be reviewing budget plans for all five of the military services in what may be the busiest week of work this year.
Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson will testify on Tuesday. Acting Army Secretary Robert Speer is scheduled to appear on Wednesday, as are Coast Guard officials. Acting Navy Secretary Sean Stackley is set for Thursday, along with Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Robert Neller.
Lawmakers are still hopeful to get most of their defense appropriations and authorization work done before the August recess, but that will mean a hectic legislative pace for the next two months if they hope to meet the deadline.
Meanwhile, Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee members will try again this week to hold a hearing on the Department of Veterans Affairs proposed overhaul of the Choice program. Their attempt last month was sidetracked by partisan fighting over Comey’s firing.
