Lockheed Martin will upgrade the Air Force’s latest missile warning satellites at no extra charge. According to the company, the fifth and sixth Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) satellites will be based on the company’s modernized A2100 spacecraft.

It is “an update that improves system affordability and resiliency while also adding the flexibility to use future payloads,” according to a Lockheed announcement. “The fifth and sixth Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO) satellites will receive this advanced spacecraft technology at no additional cost to the existing fixed-price contract.”
The modernized A2100 uses common components, streamlined manufacturing and a flexible design that reduces the cost to incorporate future, modernized sensor suites, according to the company.
